The software changes because yards keep telling us things. This is the record, with dates on it, so you do not have to take our word for that.
What is not here: anything we are planning. This page is what happened, not what we hope to do.
The Defra record is made by the ticket itself
If your site holds a permit, the Defra record is created the moment the load is taken at the gate. Nobody at the scale does anything extra, and it does not wait for the load to be priced or paid.
It is sent before the deadline whether anyone has remembered it or not. The office has a screen showing what is on its way, what has gone, and what needs a person.
If you hold an exemption, nothing is created and nothing is sent.
Your own words for a metal show up where you need them
When you write your own description for a grade, it now appears at the gate and on the price list — not just in the box where you typed it.
The colours you can put on a metal were washed out and hard to tell apart. They are now eight clear ones, including a red.
Fixes from a morning going round the app on a phone
The PIN pad was drawing six dots for a four-digit PIN. It draws four.
The screens now say “phone or tablet” instead of assuming everyone has a tablet.
The menu on an iPhone was see-through and hard to read against the page behind it. It is a solid screen now.
A security check before anything went live
The whole app was gone through against a published checklist rather than against our own opinion of what matters.
Five things needed fixing and all five were fixed, including a component that was out of date and a set of protections the site was not switching on.
A new yard starts with its metals already coded for Defra
When a yard is set up, 52 of its 55 starting metals already carry the description Defra needs. Nobody has to sit and code them one at a time before waste tracking can work.
Only your own devices can work the gate
The owner enrols a tablet or phone with a code that expires in fifteen minutes. A PIN typed on a device you did not enrol does not reach your yard.
You can enter your own Defra code and carrier registration
Both go in yourself, on the waste paperwork screen.
Once your Defra code is in, nothing reads it back out and it never appears in the record of changes.
The privacy notice became a real page
Every kind of information the app holds, why it holds it, who else touches it and how long it is kept.
Where something is not built yet, the notice says so in public rather than implying it is.
